sometimes you need to run a command on ALL of a type of node in openstack, and if you have miantirs openstack you have a fuel server you can run these commands from. using this quick one liner for example will restart every nova-compute process on all up and active nodes.

Personal Cloud - The Why

whytewolf's picture

lately I have been wanting to design and build a personal cloud setup. just a couple of servers, with a public and private facing side. nothing to out their but in the same sense enough to learn with. however there is a LOT of costs associated with a personal cloud. the price of hardware alone is mind blowing when compared to say a cheap server running vmware. however these are some of the things i plan to do with it that i think justifies the cost.

a simple solution

I thought i would post a very simple solution for a difficult problem. This is a simple cloud layout for a base level project, not much configuration needed. this really doesn't need much know how in order to pull off.

a simple understanding of Glusterfs, amazon auto scale groups to handle larger loads. AMI and snapshot control of amazon services. RDS control. and ELB [not pictured].

this setup is what i should be working on this week however I'm delayed so that my boss can get the kay for it. since it is going to be using reserved instances.

Gluster, distributed filesystem in the cloud.

okay, this was going to be a complaint about dynamic ip's in AWS, but then i found out i made a tactical mistake in how i was finding public dns ip's in amazon, not knowing that if you dig the ip from an EC2 instance the ip returned is the private ip, not the public IP. oh well lesson learned.

business?

whytewolf's picture

I'm half tempted to start a home business built around consulting about cloud computing. just to use all the knowledge i have gained and start using it to earn more money. and maybe get out of the headache of my current work environment. I could fly it under the moniker of WhyteWolf technology. however the difficult part is the location I'm starting at.

Las Vegas is not a very hospitable place to start a business due to the strict licensing issues. you need a license for pretty much everything.
